- Renzo Piano to Design Addition to Whitney
Museum in New York

This
week it was confirmed that Renzo Piano will
be designing that addition that they've been
talking about forever. They had previously worked
with Rem Koolhaas but fired him when they realized
how expensive his design was to build and maintain.
Also if you can remember back a decade or so,
Michael Graves had submitted three different
expansion designs, making the major mistake
of destroying the loved Marcel Breuer staircase
in his first two schemes. Eventually those designs
were abandoned because of strong community opposition.
Renzo Piano should have it easier, most of the
brownstones that Graves wanted to destroy have
been landmarked so his design will have much
less of a presence, at least from the outside.
This
will be Renzo Piano's third project in Manhattan,
he has designed an addition to the Morgan Library
and demolition work is currently underway on
the site where his New York Times tower will
be built.
